Giant water bug
Many water animals live in the Chiricahua Mountains. These three insects are predatory and particularly enjoy mosquito larvae when available. Some, such as the giant water bug, prefer running water, and can be seen at Myrtle Kraft Cottage when Cave Creek is running. Others, such as the whirligigs, enjoy ponds left as Cave Creek recedes. At the end of our trail along Cave Creek is a year round pool. There, along with various insects, are hundreds of a small, native fish. Minnow-size these fish have adapted to desert life. In years when that pond does dry up, they burrow into the mud under rocks where they will live until the water runs again.
