Jerusalem cricket
The Jerusalem cricket is an inch and a half long cricket-like wingless insect. (Crickets use their wings to make the songs we hear many nights.) Nocturnal predators, Jerusalem crickets burrow into the ground for the day. Renowned for their proportionately large head with strong jaw muscles, this beast can catch and consume just about anything in its size range and will pack a powerful bite if startled when picked up.
