Indian paintbrush (Castilleja)
The striking reds of the Indian paintbrush (Castilleja) are not its flowers, but rather are the plant’s bracts. This is a desert plant that will not move well. It is hemiparasitic, that is half parasitic, and the half it depends on another living plant to supply is water. Its roots are actually a system of conducting tubes (haustoria) that attach themselves to the hosts’ root system. While there are several of these plants along the cottage’s pathways, it is hard to figure out which plants support it. The support plants are possibly grasses as they are known water sources for many species of these figworts.
