Coati/coatimundi
Although authorities comment that few people have seen coatimundis, they can often be watched here day or night either in the trees or around and on our larger bird feeders. This is a prime location for coatis which prefer canyons loaded with oaks and sycamores. Like their close relatives, the raccoon and ringtail, the coatis are omnivorous and use their front paws to dig around or roll rocks in search of tasty morsels. A very social animal, 20 to 30 females and their young form bands. Their long, upright-carried, end-curled tails make them a strange and memorable sight when seen walking in line through grass taller than their bodies. Not welcomed into the groups, except during the mating season, males are loners like this one.
