Cholla
The cane cholla, which grows up to 5000' altitude, is the other conspicuous cactus in this area. It too blooms dependably, even after a dry winter. Their red to maroon flower is long lasting and frequently the cholla will re-bloom off and on all summer. This shrubby, up to 8' tall, cactus is a favorite nesting site for many birds including the curved bill thrasher, cassin’s finch, and the cactus wren.
