Giant desert centipede

This centipede with the black tail end can become nine inches long. The more common species is plain tan with somewhat darker bands and is about three inches long. Centipedes, nocturnal predators, have one set of legs for each section. Those on the last section are longer to hold its prey and those on the head section are short, sharp, and hollow with venom to inject into its victim. One found under a rock during the day will run for shelter in any direction it deems quick. Though not particularly dangerous, one should not be picked up.
