Thirty-six species of bats live in or migrate through this area. As spring arrives the insect eating bats swooping about every night devouring any bugs in flight. In August the nectar eating bats come in on their migrating route south. In addition to pollinating night bloomers such as our sweet four o’clock (Mirabilis longiflora) or sacred datura (Datura meteloides), these bats also consume all night what the hummingbirds have left in their feeders that day. Many bats spend their days in the old adobe building on our property. The building, historically a horse changing stop for stagecoaches, also provides regular shelter for such animals as the hog-nosed skunk and ringtail cat.
